Stone Ridge Residences December Blog 1 Winter Fun

As the holiday celebrations continue into the New Year, here’s a reminder of how much fun you can have in and around Herkimer during the winter season!

Ice Skating

The Utica University Nexus Center, the outdoor skating rink at 220 Memorial Parkway in Utica, and the New Hartford Recreation Center are among the rinks where you can skate. Check ahead with each rink to confirm the dates and times they offer public skating.

If you need to rest your feet, check out a Utica Comets hockey game at the Adirondack Bank Center, which offers more than just hockey.

Winter Hiking Upstate and in the Adirondacks

Several local parks, including Thruway Park in Herkimer and Valley View Golf Course in Utica, offer snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The trails are free to explore, though rentals may be available for a small fee on site.

You can also snowshoe in the city! Visit the Utica Zoo and snowshoe to its different exhibits to spot an Arctic fox, African lions, and more!

Last but not least, the Adirondack Mountains are only a short drive away, offering many winter hiking and snowshoeing trails. While snowshoe rentals can be found locally, the hikes themselves are free to enjoy. Tip: Always check trail conditions before venturing out.

Tube, Sled, and Ski

In Utica, the Val Bialas Ski Center hosts weekend winter fun that includes snow tubing, sledding, and skiing down its slopes and trails. There may even be an option to take ski lessons! Grab a seat on the chairlift, and we’ll see you at the top.

By participating in these low-cost or free winter events, you can enjoy much of what Herkimer and our region have to offer during winter. There’s something for everyone! Keep an eye on local event calendars for updates on dates and availability.
